House in a Field

Heritage Conservation | Conservation Area | New House Dorset |  Low Carbon Technologies

Location: Dorset
Date: 2025 - ongoing

Designing a Sustainable Dwelling Within a Conservation Area.

A new low embodied carbon, low energy single dwelling, sited within a field within a Conservation Area.

  • The field is grassed and is temporarily grazed by a pony. A large mature oak tree is located in the centre of the field adjacent to the gentle embankment.

The focal point of the house is the aspect across the field towards the central oak. The house is angled to envelop an outdoor seating area on the south side of the property with the kitchen and living room opening out on to this seating area.

  • The new dwelling is intended to be an exemplar of low embodied carbon, low energy design drawing on best practice in the technical design of low embodied carbon construction homes as well as fostering the use of traditional craftsmanship, materials and vernacular building forms. The objective is to create a beautiful, sustainable home in an ecologically rich woodland meadow setting.

The front door opens between these two main family rooms. A central hallway off the front door links the ground floor rooms with a staircase rising through a double height top lit hallway to the first floor.
