Southfields and Newry housing

This project is for 53 much needed social housing units in a new network of streets on a brownfield site to the south of Leicester.

  • In all of these project our focus is to deliver housing that ‘gets the basics right’ which our research found is the priority of residents and clients alike. We defined what these basics are and then took part in an extensive period of community and stakeholder consultation which developed these principles into proposals for high quality sustainable neighbourhoods that respond to the specific context of each site.

The Southfields and Newry scheme creates a new community of generously sized, low running cost housing in a streetscape designed to promote interaction between residents and ownership of the new public realm. The external fabric of the housing is designed in excess of the Building Regulation standards in terms of thermal performance and air tightness and is to be delivered using Modern Methods of Construction with the timber superstructure being made in a local factory. The sustainable design for each unit includes Air Source Heat Pumps, heat recovery ventilation systems and photovoltaic panels to make the homes low cost in use. The site wide strategy of high quality landscape will promote pedestrian and cycle journeys and includes a landscaped SuDS amenity area. A tree will be planted for each new house and hundreds of metres of hedgerow will contribute to the significantly enhanced biodiversity of the site.
